Salut! So Glad You're Here.

About Me

My name is Meghan Delve and I am originally from Cambridge, Ontario. Growing up in a town with seven arenas, it has given me a love of hometown hockey. I graduated in 2020 from University of Ottawa with an Honours Baccalaureate of Arts degree with a specialization in History and a Minor in German Language and Culture. I entered the Teachers Education Program at the University of Ottawa in September of the same year.

My passion for teaching keeps growing with every experience I have in the classroom. From placements with the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) and teaching with the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), it is always a new adventure.

Philosophy of Teaching

My educational philosophy comes from the saying: be the teacher you wish you had. I have had my experience with both great and not-so-great teachers, all of whom have shaped what I believe a teacher should be. I thoroughly believe learning is on-going and continuous, which is why my current pedagogy is focused on decolonizing the classroom as we work towards reconciliation. I have been told "once you know better, do better" so I have been learning as much as I can to learn about how I can improve as a teacher and ally.

The methods and madness of learning are best done when students lead their own inquiry and construct meaning. The teacher is there to guide them through modeling, challenging, and orienting the students on their learning journey. However, students are not equal in their learning, and some may require enrichment while others need scaffolding. Differentiation is key in providing equitable learning as the teacher challenges their students. Nevertheless, students should have a say in their education. It is important to me that, when the school year is done, students feel heard and respected in my class.

As learning often improves with inquiry, I believe in collective learning, rather than a collective of learners. Students should learn how to work with others through positive interdependence, which should also open them up to hearing from different perspectives and gain pertinent critical thinking skills. A classroom should be a safe community where everyone is included fairly, despite any barriers that exist. As a teacher, we need to take into consideration the environment and culture of our students and respond accordingly to meet their needs.

My past learning and teaching experiences emphasized the need to be flexible, fair, and a little zany. Students learn best when they are having fun. However, being well supported and equitably supported are vital in creating a fun learning environment in which students can grow and allow bold curiosity to guide them into the future.
